The recent tornado warnings across the area have prompted many cities to revisit the issue of storm shelters.
At this week's meeting of the Parsons City Commission, City Manager Jeff Cantrell raised the issue. Currently, the four public schools in Parsons are available as shelters in severe weather. Cantrell says he recently spoke with USD 503 Superintendent Lori Perkins about the use of the shelters.
Cantrell says building new shelters would be very expensive for the City.
During the recent storms, some Parsons residents sought shelter at the Parsons Municipal Building. Cantrell says, that building is not adequate for shelter.
No action was taken on the issue.
In other business, commissioners approved $5,000 for the Safe Haven Outreach Mission from the D.V. Reed fund and also set the date for a Public Hearing for the demolition for 8 structures for July 2.
