Storm Shelters Discussed at Cherryvale Council Meeting

The Cherryvale City Council discusses storm shelter options after a recent tornado warning.

At Monday's meeting, Cherryvale Resident Tracy Wenino addressed the Council regarding the lack of storm shelter options in town.

Currently, the parsonage of the Cherryvale Bible Holiness Church is the only storm shelter listed in Cherryvale. City Clerk Karen Davis says the city holds the insurance policy for the Library, but the decision to re-open it as a shelter will be in the hands of the library board.

Council Member Devin Conner says he would like to be able to provide shelter for residents but also points out that the state will reimburse homeowners who build their own shelters up to $3,500 through the Sunflower Safe Program.

The school was also discussed as a potential shelter, but that decision will be up to the school board.
