The City of Independence receives federal grant funding for safety improvements across the City.
The City applied for and recently received confirmation of a $1.6 million grant from the Safe Streets For All program. The program funds projects by focusing on on high-injury networks, pedestrian safety, and reducing dangerous streets and roads. City engineer John Garris says as large part of this grant will go toward the construction in a highly traveled part of the city.
Garris says there will also be additional curb extensions like the ones found in the downtown area.
The City will need formal approval from the City Commission to accept the grant before any work can begin.
