National Weather Service Determines Sycamore Tornado an EF-2

The National Weather Service determines that the tornado that hit Sycamore on Sunday night is an EF-2.

Representatives from the NWS were in Sycamore on Monday to survey the damage and make the determination. An EF-2 tornado is classified as a "strong" tornado with estimated wind speeds of 111 to 135mph. The determination was based on the damage done, which included the uprooting of large trees and building damage like the tearing off of roofs. The tornado's windspeed was estimated at around 125mph. That kind of damage occurred in Sycamore, especially in the areas east of US-75 on County Road 5800. Montgomery County Emergency Management Director Rick Whitson praised the response of local emergency services. He says the response went very smoothly.

Despite the damage, only one person was reported injured by the storm. That person was transported to a nearby hospital with injuries to the head and leg. Montgomery County has issued a formal disaster declaration in order to assist those who suffered losses in receiving aid.
