The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 5-year-old in central Kansas.

 

The KBI is assisting the Ellsworth County Sheriff's Office in the incident that occurred in the City of Brookeville, located about 15 miles west of Salina. On Saturday afternoon around 3:15, a caller from a residence located south of the intersection of Kansas Highway 141 and Avenue N, reported a shooting where two children were severely injured. Emergency crews were called to the scene where they found a 5-year-old female and an 8-year-old male, both suffering from gunshot wounds.

 

The five-year old child was pronounced deceased at the scene. The 8-year-old child was flown to a Wichita hospital, where he is currently listed in critical condition. Preliminary information indicates that a third young child picked up a loaded, unsecured shotgun and fired, striking two siblings.

 

The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
