Independence City Commission to Meet Tonight

The Independence City Commission will meet tonight and discuss upcoming projects at Riverside Park and the Professional Building downtown.

Commissioners are expected to set the date for a public hearing to approve a Reinvestment Housing District for the redevelopment of the Professional Building at 201 North Penn Avenue. The U.S Federal Properties Company is proposing to redevelopment the historic building into apartments with commercial space on the ground floor. In what is similar to the Neighborhood Revitalization Program, an R-H-I-D allows the base property tax value to remain unchanged, while a portion of the new taxes generated from improvements made on the second floor and above for housing, may be rebated to offset eligible housing construction costs for up to 25 years.

Commissioners will also consider awarding a contract for a roof repair project on both the Stich Shelter House and the Garden House at Riverside Park for just over $166,000.

Also up for discussion will be two ordinances that would change the rental rates for hangers at the Independence Municipal Airport.

Tonight's meeting begins at 5:30 in the Commission Room at the City Hall in Independence. The meeting is open to the public and can also be viewed online via the City's website.
