A burn ban is issued for Nowata County. The ban prohibits burning any material or substance that can start a forest, grass, range, crop or wildland fire. The burn ban does affect controlled burns.
Nowata Fire Chief Jason Goodell says right now the conditions are to dangerous for fires. There are exceptions to the ban, which include outdoor grilling and welding. Chief Goodell says welders need to keep an extinguisher close. District Three Commissioner Troy Friddle says it is important to follow the burn ban.
The ban is in effect until April 8th unless there there is rainfall, the ban may be canceled prior to the date. Violators may face misdemeanor charges, which include a fine up to $500 or one year imprisonment.
