Crop Progress Report: Winter Wheat Up, Soil Moisture Down

 

Spring is here, and winter wheat is entering its prime growing season.

 

According to the latest report from the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, winter wheat jointed in east central Kansas leads the state at 13%. Southeast Kansas is not far behind at 11%. Both are higher than the statewide average of 6%.

 

Soil moisture continues to go the wrong direction, with now 60% of topsoil moisture rated short or very short.
