Multiple departments respond to a structure fire in Elk Falls.
Last night just after 7:30 p.m., a structure fire was reported in the 100 block of 7th Street in Elk Falls. Upon arrival, Elk Falls fire crews found flames and heavy smoke visible. Another page was requested for tanker support and tankers from Elk Falls, Longton, Grenola, Moline and Howard along with engines. Additional tanker support was requested from Atlanta.
During the firefighting efforts, A Howard firefighter sustained minor injuries and was briefly trapped from a ceiling collapse in the attached garage. While firefighters on the outside worked to free him he was able to get out of the building.
At this point offensive operations were ceased and the structure evacuated with crews transitioning to exterior defensive operations. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time. The structure is expected to be a total loss. The last crew cleared the scene by 2 a.m.
