Montgomery County Reviews Burn Ban Process

The Montgomery County Commissioner, Rural Fire, and Emergency Management review the process and results of last week’s burn ban.

District Fire Chief Michael Smith and County Emergency Management Director Rick Whitson addressed commissioners at this week’s meeting. Whitson says one of the steps he and Smith took before issuing last week’s burn ban was to consult with Commissioner Phil Clubine, who farms in the county.

Last week’s ban was issued on Wednesday night and was set to last until Saturday. However, conditions changed and the ban was lifted on Friday morning. Clubine says the County’s goal is balancing safety with the needs of farmers and ranchers.

Last week, Montgomery County also sent several units to assist the State Fire Marshal’s Office in other parts of the state. Commission Chair Mike Cordray says helping other areas of the state means Montgomery County will be able to get similar assistance if conditions warrant.

Rick Whitson told commissioners that they are keeping a close watch on conditions in case another burn ban is warranted this week, but adds that, at this time, another ban seems unlikely.
