Altamont City Council Discusses Options on Loan for Sewer Repairs

The Altamont City Council is discussing its options when it comes to paying for some much needed repairs to the City sewer system.

Last summer, the council approved taking out a $750,000 State Revolving Fund loan to cover the cost of the repairs, which included maintenance to sewer lagoons, lift stations, and sewer mains. This prompted the city to raise sewer rates to $45. City Administrator LeeAnn Myers says the City may be forced to raise rates again.

Council Member Lyle Sykes says, the City does not want to raise rates, but repairs must be made, and there may be no other choice.

One Altamont citizen present at the meeting says such an increase would be a hardship for many residents.

No action was taken on the issue at last week’s meeting. City officials say they will continue to pursue solutions that would limit the burden on rate payers.
