Fire destroys a home near Columbus.
According to the Columbus Fire Department, around 5:40 p.m. yesterday, crews were dispatched to a reported structure fire southwest of town off Southwest 30th Street on Messer Road.
Upon arrival, crews encountered an older two-story structure with heavy fire involvement. Due to the advanced condition of the fire and the structure itself, the home quickly became fully engulfed despite aggressive firefighting efforts.
Firefighters transitioned to a defensive strategy, focusing on protecting nearby structures and surrounding exposures. While the primary residence was a total loss, crews were successful in preventing the fire from spreading to neighboring properties.
There were no injuries reported.
Multiple area fire departments responded to assist with manpower and water supply operations, as well as as Cherokee County Sheriff's Office and Cherokee County EMS.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
