Independence City Commission Agrees to Assist Extension District with Cost of Sidewalk

The Independence City Commission agrees to help cover the cost of a sidewalk replacement project near the new Wildcat Extension District Office on West Myrtle.

The Wildcat Extension District has asked the City to help share in the cost of replacing about 800 square feet of sidewalk at the new location at 712 West Myrtle. City Manager Kelly Passauer says the District has asked for a similar agreement to one that was given to USD 446.

The City was asked to help cover 50% of the cost of the project, up to $4,600, with the money coming from economic development funds. Mayor Dean Hayse says he supports the measure because of the economic benefits the Extension District provides.

Commissioner Scott Smith opposed the measure. He says it's a matter of fairness.

The final vote on the measure was 2 to 1, with Smith as the lone no vote.
