Fort Scott Mourns 3-Year-Old Killed in House Fire

The community of Fort Scott is mourning the loss of a 3-year-old boy who died in a house fire on Tuesday morning.

Authorities say Fort Scott firefighters responded to the scene in the 2300 block of Jewel Avenue around 5:30 Tuesday morning. The child – identified as Kai Alexzander Nelson – was reportedly spending the night at his grandparents' home when the fire occurred. Family members say both of the boy's grandparents were in the home at the time of the blaze but were unable to reach Kai to get him to safety. The grandmother sustained minor burns.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Friday to confirm the cause of death for the medical examiner. The fire remains under investigation by the Bourbon County Sheriff's Office.
