Sedan Votes to Keep Police Department

The City of Sedan votes to move forward with an effort to keep the city police department.

The Sedan city Council held its second special meeting on the issue last night to discuss options following the resignation of the Sedan Chief of Police and another officer. At the first special meeting held last Friday, many members of the community voiced their support for keeping the department as opposed to allowing the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office to take over policing in the community. The City will need to hire new officers by April in order to maintain a police force. Council Member Wellington Butler says the City must outline job requirements and, if needed, have a back-up plan.

Council Member Crystal Wade says they need to encourage many candidates to apply.

The Council voted to post two job openings: One for Police Chief with a base pay of $48,000 and a second for an officer with a pay rate from $16.50 to $18 per hour.
