Deep Fission to Hold Public Meeting Tonight in Parsons

The Deep Fission company schedules a public meeting to address citizen questions and concerns about a proposed underground nuclear reactor to be constructed at the Great Plains Industrial Park east of Parsons.

The California-based Deep Fission company announced plans in December to place a small modular pressurized water reactor in a borehole one mile underground at the Industrial Park. The project is part of the Reactor Pilot Program from the U.S. Department of Energy and was approved by the Labette County Commission. It is also supported by the Parsons City Commission. Deep Fission announced this week that it has begun drilling on the Parsons acquisition well, The well will be drilled to a depth of approximately 6,000 feet and will have a diameter of roughly eight inches. It is the first of three planned wells and represents the initial phase of site characterization and engineering validation.

Parsons residents have expressed concerns about the project. Those concerns led to the formation of a community group called the Prairie Dog Alliance that has held several townhall meetings about the project.

Deep Fission has been in the process of meeting with Parsons area officials but has now opted for more transparency with the public. The meeting will be held tonight at the Wall Event Center, located at 2605 Main Street in Parsons, from 5 to 7pm.

Those who are unable to attend in person may submit questions or comments through the Deep Fission community page.

The meeting will also be livestreamed on FaceBook.
