Two state agencies are called in to investigate the recent death of an inmate at the Lansing Correctional Facility.
Facility staff say 32-year-old Raymond Michael Sanders died Tuesday afternoon, March 3, after he was found unresponsive in his cell. Staff and Emergency Medical Service personnel administered life-saving measures but were unable to revive him. According to standard procedure, Sanders' death is under investigation by the Kansas Department of Corrections and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. The cause of death is pending the results of an independent autopsy.
Sanders was serving a 10-month sentence for parole violations. Sanders previously served 33 months on four convictions of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer in Jefferson County.
The Lansing Correctional Facility, formerly known as the Kansas State Penitentiary, is an all-male facility that houses maximum, medium, and minimum security inmates.
The cause of Sanders' death remains under investigation.
