Kansas Legislature Overrides Kelly Veto of Trans Bathroom Bill

Kansans will soon be required to use the bathroom that corresponds to their biological sex at birth in all government buildings after the state legislature overrides the veto of Governor Laura Kelly.

Both Houses of the Legislature voted on the House Substitute for Senate Bill 244 this week following Kelly's veto on Friday. The Senate voted on a party line vote to override the veto. Senate President Ty Masterson calls the vote.

The House vote followed soon after, passing that Chamber 87 to 37. The bill also requires Kansans to use the marker of the birth sex on their driver's licenses and birth certificates. The law goes into effect immediately after the paperwork is filed at the Secretary of State's Office.
