USD 446 To Reapply for Grant to Fund After School Program

USD 446 in Independence announces the district will reapply for federal grant funding to provide partial funding for its after school program.

The grant money would go toward the Kids Crews After School program offered by the Independence School district. It would also support additional summer school programming opportunities. The Kids Crew Program allows students to have a safe, structured place to stay after the school day is over, but while their parents are still at work.

The district will reapply for a 21st Century Community Learning Centers or 21st CCLC After School Program Grant. The grant is funded by federal dollars and administered by the Kansas State Department of Education. It is intended to fund after school programs for schools eligible for Title I School wide Programs. The Title I designation typically means at least 40% of the students qualify for free or reduced-price meals.

Independence students in the Kids Crew program receive before and after school supervision and have the chance to take part in field trips, academic assistance, and additional time with peers.
