Kansas Governor Laura Kelly issues a verbal state of disaster emergency proclamation due to the extended period of dangerous fire weather through Thursday.
The highest risk is expected in western Kansas as the area is forecast to have high winds and low humidity this week. A Fire Watch is in effect for most of north central, northeast, and east central Kansas Tuesday. Officials emphasize that dry grass and other fuels can dry out in as little as one hour under these conditions, significantly increasing the risk of rapid fire ignition and spread.
The Kansas Forest Service Fire Management Office urges the public to avoid activities that could spark a fire and to report any smoke or fire to local authorities immediately to prevent damage to property and people.
