The City of Altamont is urging citizens to remain vigilant when it comes to fire danger.
Despite the recent rainy weather, rainfall totals in southeast Kansas have fallen below average for the first part of 2026. In the past few weeks, this has led to a higher risk of fire. Altamont Mayor and Assistant Fire Chief Richard Hayward says Altamont has seen more structure fires than usual so far this year.
Hayward says the dry weather to start the year led to multiple grass fires as well.
Residents can reduce the risk of fire by avoiding burning in dry, windy conditions, removing or relocating flammable materials, and planning controlled burns. Taking fire risks seriously year round can help reduce the risk of both structure and grass fires.
