Montgomery County Approves Agreement KDOT Agreement for Spears Rail Spur

Montgomery County Commissioners approve an agreement with the Kansas Department of Transportation to act as a pass-through for state grant funding to build the new rail spur for a Caney manufacturer.

The grant comes through the KDOT Economic Development Program to assist Spears Manufacturing with a major expansion of its Caney facility. County Administrator Jonathan Booe says the state funding will cover all of the $415,000 project with a 25% match from Spears.

The county will act in a similar role as it did for the recent expansion of Coffeyville Regional Medical Center. Booe says, because the funds will pass through the county, there will be some bookkeeping required.

Due to the availability of the contractor chosen to work on the project, construction will likely not begin until this summer.
