Two Injured in Cherokee County Crash

A three-vehicle accident in Cherokee County leaves two injured.

The accident occurred around 6:30 Monday morning on Old Highway 166 about 5 miles east of Baxter Springs. The three vehicles involved were all traveling westbound on the highway when the lead vehicle – a 2017 Kia Sportage driven by 57-year-old Carrie Shafer of Joplin – slowed to make a left turn into a residence. The next vehicle in line – a 1993 Chevy Silverado driven by 45-year-old Darren Doke of Galena – slowed and was struck from behind by the third vehicle – a 2022 Chrysler Voyager driven by 27-year-old Acunga Mmunga of Wichita. This collision pushed Doke's vehicle into the turning Kia.

Both Mmunga and Shafer sustained minor injuries and were taken to a Joplin hospital for treatment.
