The Independence Fire Department responds to a shed fire.
This morning just before 7:30, Independence Firefighters were dispatched to the 100 block of Hackberry for a reported structure fire.
Upon arrival, firefighters located an 8’ x 8’ metal shed with fire visible from both the front and rear of the structure. Crews quickly extinguished the fire without incident, preventing any extension to nearby structures.
The resident advised firefighters that the shed was used for his dogs to sleep at night and that a heat lamp was being used to keep the animals warm. No injuries were reported. The incident is currently under investigation by the Independence Fire Department.
The department is reminding residents that heat lamps can pose a serious fire risk if not used properly. Heat lamps should be plugged directly into outlets and kept away from bedding, hay, wood and other flammable materials. Residents may also want to consider alternatives such as heating pads designed for animals.
