Galena To Address Issue of Landfill Odor

The City of Galena is responding to resident calls to do something about the ongoing of issue or odor coming from its municipal landfill.

Citizens in the Galena area have been complaining about the strong odor of hydrogen sulfide coming from the landfill for nearly eighteen months. The odor is described as being similar to the smell of rotten eggs. In January, the City began a process of treating the odor by adding topsoil containing a odor-reducing chemical called Odor-X to the site. The chemical is supposed to help break down compounds in the landfill to prevent the reactions that cause the hydrogen sulfide gas. City officials also say they plan to add compost to the landfill as an additional measure.

The City of Galena will also install air monitoring equipment to track the odor in an attempt to pinpoint the parts of the landfill that are causing the most problems.
