After several days of below freezing temperatures, area cities are encouraging residents to take a few minutes and check around their homes for water leaks.

Pipes freezing and rethawing can lead to cracks and water line breaks, which can result in high water usage and higher water bills. They can also cause other issues such as basement flooding and slick exterior surfaces. Leaks also increase the risk of electrical issues and short circuits, which can lead to a risk of fire.
