The Kansas Legislature passes a bathroom bill that requires individuals to use bathrooms that align with their birth sex while in government buildings.
The bill passed the Kansas House on an 87 to 36 vote following a nearly six-hour debate on the House floor. Shortly after the House vote, the bill also passed the Kansas Senate 30 to 9. the requirements of the bill will apply to all restrooms, changing rooms, and loc ker rooms owned by the State of Kansas, including local governments, public K through 12 schools, colleges and universities. Government entities that fail to clearly designate restrooms as either male or female could face a $25,000 fine for the first offense and a $125,000 for each subsequent offense.
The bill now heads to the desk of Governor Laura Kelly.
