The City of Independence is clarifying its involvement in a national program after questions following a recent press release.
Finance Director Lacey Lies says the City was selected to participate in Welcoming America’s Rural Welcoming Initiative, but emphasizes the program is not a settlement, relocation or recruitment effort. It does not place or encourage immigrants or refugees to move into participating communities. Instead, the initiative provides technical assistance and peer learning opportunities to help strengthen civic engagement, leadership development and community connections for all residents.
Lies says the effort is not political and not about changing the character of the community. She says the focus is on strengthening neighborly connections, celebrating what makes Independence unique and supporting residents’ ability to participate fully in civic, social and economic life.
