Local Fire Departments Urge Heater Safety During Cold Snap

The recent cold weather prompts local fire departments to remind residents to practice heater safety.

Fire officials urge caution in using small space heaters, which can pose a fire risk. Space heaters should be kept at least 3 feet away from curtains, furniture, and other flammable objects. They should also be plugged directly into wall outlets and not into an extension cord. Space heaters should never be left unattended.

Other tips for safe and effective heater use include setting ceiling fans to reverse in order to pull heat down from the ceiling and to make sure your home has a working carbon monoxide detector. Never use an oven for heat.

Following these simple guidelines can help reduce the risk of fire and other hazards during cold weather.
