Washington County Sheriff Office Warns of Deputy Impersonation Scam

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a scam involving callers impersonating deputies.

Officials say scammers are using fake phone numbers and urgent threats to pressure people into acting quickly often claiming there’s a warrant, fine or legal issue that must be handled immediately. The Sheriff’s Office reminds the public that real deputies will never ask for money, gift cards, cryptocurrency or personal information over the phone. Demands for immediate payment or threats of arrest are clear red flags.

Anyone who receives a suspicious call, hang up and verify the number directly with the agency. Officials say if it feels wrong, it probably is and it’s always okay to hang up.
