Yates Center Votes to Disband Police Department; Immediately Reverses Course

The City of Yates Center holds two meetings this week.

In the first meeting on Tuesday night, the City Council voted to disband the Yates Center Police Department, citing a lack of funding as the primary reason. Those supporting the move argued that the Woodson County Sheriff's Department would be able to take over law enforcement duties for the town of 1,300 people. The outcry from Yates Center residents followed shortly after.

The City Council then called a special meeting for Wednesday evening and voted to reverse the decision. The vote means that Yates Center will keep its police department for now. City leaders say they will continue to work to find a way to ensure adequate law enforcement in the City while balancing the City's financial needs.
