The City of Independence awards the contract for a major project to improve pedestrian safety on West Main Street.
At the most recent meeting of the Independence City Commission, commissioners approved the award of a bid for the installation of a multi-use path along West Main. City Engineer John Garris says the project will install a paved walkway where no sidewalks currently exist.
Garris says the path is needed because many pedestrians and bicyclists travel in the area.
The $1.37 million project was awarded to J. Graham Construction of Coffeyville and will be paid for by federal fudning through the Kansas Department of Transportation. The City of Independence will provide an addition $258,000 in matching funds.
