The Labette County Sheriff’s Office warns residents about a phone scam involving inmates being be released early from jail in exchange for immediate payment.
LCSO says several people have received the calls from unknown individuals, but that those calls are fraudulent.
Sheriff’s officials remind everyone that bonds have to be set by a judge before an inmate can be released. They also stress that the jail does not accept Walmart gift cards, prepaid cards or other non-cash equivalents as bond payment. When a bond is legitimately set, inmates typically contact a licensed bail bondsman or a family member to make arrangements.
Anyone who receives these calls should not provide money or personal information and should immediately contact the Labette County Sheriff’s Office.
