**UPDATE: 70-year-old Robert Deatherage of Coffeyville succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at Joplin's Freeman Hospital.

 

A Coffeyville man is seriously injured in a single-vehicle accident east of Independence.

 

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the crash happened Tuesday just before 3 p.m. when 70-year-old Robert Deatherage of Coffeyville was driving a 2019 GMC Terrain eastbound on U.S. 160.  His vehicle left the roadway to the right striking a culvert. The SUV continued eastbound across County Road 4500 before striking an embankment. It then rolled one time coming to rest on its wheels facing south in the east ditch of County Road 4500.  Deatherage was taken to a Joplin hospital with suspected serious injuries.  He was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.
