Early-Morning Fire in Independence

Local firefighters work an early-morning structure fire amid challenging cold-weather conditions.

Just after 2:30 this morning, Independence Fire-EMS was dispatched to the 500 block of North 13th Street for a reported structure fire. Upon arrival, firefighters found a single-story residence with heavy fire showing through the roof. Strong north winds estimated at 20–30 mph made firefighting operations more challenging. Due to the wind conditions, the fire spread from the initial residence to a neighboring house to the south. Burning embers were also carried several blocks south of the original fire location. Water runoff also froze and caused icy road conditions and led to four firefighters slipping and falling. No serious injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

The fire is currently under investigation by Independence Fire-EMS in cooperation with the Independence Police Department. Dearing Fire, Cherryvale Fire, Cherryvale Rural and Sycamore Rural also assisted at the scene.
