The Oklahoma Department of Transportation is assessing the damage to six county bridges above the Will Rogers Turnpike after the are hit by an oversized truck.
Beams on the bridges in Mayes and Rogers County were damaged by the illegally over-height truck on Tuesday afternoon as it traveled eastbound between Claremore and Vinita. Six bridges between State Highway-266 near Verdigris and east of State Highway-28 near Vinita were damaged and four of the county road bridges have been closed until repairs can be made. The Will Rogers Turnpike remains open in each direction, but nightly lane closures will occur when repair work begins.
It is illegal for trucks taller than 14 feet to travel the state highway system without permits and approved routes. The bridges damaged Tuesday range from 14 feet and 11 inches to 15 feet and 4 inches in vertical clearance, well above the legal limit.
