High Winds and Increased Fire Danger Today

A wind advisory is in effect today for Kansas and southwest Missouri.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory today with a red flag warning going into effect in southeast Kansas from 10am to 6pm. Wind gusts could be as high as 50 mph with winds increasing in intensity in central Kansas. The windy conditions also increase the risk of grass fires across the area, with southeast Kansas in the very high category of fire danger.

Residents are asked to use caution and properly discard of cigarettes and smoking devices, keep vehicles off of dry grass, and avoid activities with open flames or that create sparks.

Blowing dust may also cause a hazard for drivers. The Kansas Department of Transportation briefly closed I-70 in both directions between Goodland and Colby this morning due to the danger and decreased visibility caused by blowing dust.
