Police in Cowley County are investigating a suspicious package discovered Tuesday in downtown Winfield.

Cowley County Sheriff Dave Falletti says his deputies located what is being called unclaimed property near the Cowley County Courthouse in the 1500 block of Winfield's Main Street yesterday morning. The Wichita Bomb Squad was called in and retrieved the item. As a precautionary measure, the area near the courthouse was evacuated until the device was removed.

The investigation remains ongoing.
