Despite slowing down to very low speeds, multiple accidents were reported throughout southeast Kansas last night, as snow moved through the area, causing roads and bridges to freeze.
Multiple accidents occurred at the railroad overpass on U.S. 169 just south of the Coffeyville Municipal Airport, including a truck that ended up upside down between lanes of traffic.
The westbound lane of US 166 at the overpass just west of Coffeyville was closed for a time due to an accident. An accident was also reported in Independence at the railroad overpass on West Main, while multiple accidents were reported on U.S. 400 between the U.S. 75 Junction and Neodesha.
Highway officials remind residents that elevated surfaces will freeze sooner than highways, and they ask that motorists reduce speed and be aware of the presence of black ice during while traveling during winter weather events.
