Students at Labette County High School in Altamont hear from guest speakers about domestic violence.
In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, L-C-H-S students in freshman health classes heard from two guest speakers about how to recognize the signs of domestic abuse. Local mental health therapist Crystal Ellis and Victim's Assistance Coordinator for the Parsons Domestic Violence Unit Cyprus Jones spoke with students yesterday about recognizing red flags in relationships, seeing the link between bullying and unhealthy relationships, and identifiying the impact abuse can have on family systems. Students learned key statistics about domestic abuse, about the importance of breaking the stigma of silence around the issue, and about how to access resources for help.
The Parsons Police Department initiated the Domestic Violence Unit in January in an attempt to reduce the incidence of domestic abuse in the community.
