Changes Coming to OK DUI Laws on Nov. 1

Starting on November 1st, DUI laws in Oklahoma will get tougher.

Changes to the law include the possibility of a felony charge even for first-time offenders. Conditions that will make the offense a felony include having a BAC of .15 or higher, attempts to evade law enforcement, having a child in the vehicle at the time of the offense, and driving 20 mph or more over the posted speed limit. The rule also applies to offenders who engage in reckless driving such as crossing the center line, unsafe passing, driving on the wrong side of the road, and failure to maintain a lane. It also includes any suspected DUI driver who is involved in a crash that cause property damage above a certain threshold, injury, or death.

Law enforcement agencies say the goal of the changes to the law is deterrence.
