The City of Independence announces an agreement with a new landfill service.

At this week's city commission meeting, commissioners approved an agreement with Green Environmental Services to send garbage to the company's new waste transfer station near Cherryvale. City Engineer John Garris says Green's site is currently under construction and won't be ready until spring.

The move will not cause any changes to current trash pickup in the city. This move, in addition to increased demand for bulky item pickups and roll-off dumpster services and more resident disposals at the City Sanitation Yard mean a rate increase for trash pick up is likely in the future. Independence has not yet made any changes to trash collection rates.
