Coffeyville Public School's Child Nutrition receives the Kansans Can Best Practice – Serve Local Foods Award.
Director of Child Nutrition Casey Worden says the award is for their shift toward making more meals from scratch and embracing locally-grown produce. The department received a grant for a hydroponic garden and to date have harvested over 1,000 pounds of leafy greens. Worden says what they can't grow they try to buy as local as possible.
Worden says she couldn't have made this change without the help of her staff. Coffeyville's Child Nutrition Department received the award during the Kansas State Board of Education’s meeting on October 14th, in Topeka.
