The first of four lead awareness workshops in Montgomery County is coming up tonight in Caney.

 

The events are being put together by the Montgomery County Local Health Equity Action Team. Organizer Linda Follett says this is an important topic, especially given southeast Kansas' history of lead smelting.

 

Lead can also be found in older homes with certain types of paint. Follett these topics and ways to prevent exposure will be discussed. She says there will also be free, same-day lead screening tests, plus guest speakers, food, books and door prizes.

 

The workshop starts tonight at 6 p.m. at the Caney Rec center at 403 E First St. Other workshops will be held at the the Coffeyville Rec this Thursday at 6, Independence Memorial Hall next Tuesday and the Cherryvale Community Center next Thursday.
