The USD 286 Board of Education approves an update to their technology policy.
The board voted to prohibit the use of all personal devices including cell phones, earbuds, smartwatches, and Bluetooth headphones, during school hours, including lunch periods. The goal of the new policy is to minimize distractions, increase student engagement and maintain a safe and focused learning environment across all grade levels.
Superintendent Jamie Wetig says that the ban includes any non-district issued device capable of communicating electronically or accessing the internet. Students are expected to keep their devices turned off and stored securely in a backpack, locker or vehicle during the school day. Exceptions will be made for students with approved Individualized Education Programs, 504 Plans or medical plans that specifically require the use of a personal device for educational or medical reasons and only as described in those plans.
