Deer/Car Collisions More Frequent in October

Autumn in Kansas means drivers must be careful to avoid hitting deer.

Due to breeding season, collisions are more likely to occur from October through the end of the year. Shawn Steward with Triple-A Kansas says it's a particularly dangerous time of year for car-deer collisions.

Tips to avoid collisions with a deer include being watchful when driving at dawn and dusk when the animals are most likely to be on the move, and reduce speed and be alert near wooded areas. Steward says it's always a good idea to wear your seat belt.

Anyone involved in a collision with a deer or other animal resulting in personal injury or property damage totaling $1,000 or more is required to report the accident to local law enforcement.
