Emergency personnel respond to an apparent ammonia leak at the CVR Nitrogen plant.
The incident was reported this afternoon just after 4 p.m. According to initial reports, at least 15 people have been exposed and are receiving medical attention. Sirens sounded at the plant earlier this afternoon, and employees were staging at entrances, but the general public does not need to take any action at this time.
EMS units from Coffeyville in addition to Independence, Caney, Tyro and Cherryvale have been called to assist at the scene. A medical team from Coffeyville Regional Medical Center is also reported to be responding. In addition to CRMC, patients are being transported to Independence and other area hospitals.
***** Update 5:35 p.m.: The north parking lot at CRMC is being blocked off to allow helicopters to land and transport patients to other hospitals.
