Asian Longhorned Ticks Found in Kansas

State agencies report the first known occurance of an invasive species of tick in Kansas.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Kansas Department of Agriculture have announced the first known occurance of the Asian longhorned tick in the state. The invasive arachnid was identified last week on a dog in Frankin County in eastern Kansas.

Asian longhorned ticks have been spreading westward across the United States since they were first identified in New Jersey in 2017. Since that time, they have been identified in 21 states, now including Kansas. The tick can feed on a wide range os hosts, including livestock, pets, wildlife, and humans. It can cause serious illness in both animals and humans.

To avoid tick bites, use an EPA-approved insect repellant when in tick-heavy environments, wear hats and long sleeves and pants, and check pets for ticks.
