The Hays Police Department releases the identity of the officer killed in the line of duty on Saturday night.

 

Police say Sergeant Scott Heimann was struck and killed by a single round fired from a Hays residence that was the scene of a domestic violence call. Heimann responded to the scene around 11pm opn Saturday night and was shot by the suspect as he set up a preimeter in the back yard of the residence.

 

Heimann was airlifted to a regional hospital but died from his wounds around 4am on Sunday. He had served as an officer at the Hays Police Department since 2018.

 

The suspect identified as 34-year-old Zane Wickham of Hays was found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the residence.
