A Hays police officer is dead following a response to a domestic violence call.

The incident happened just before 11pm Saturday night when the officer responded to a report of domestic violence at a Hays residence. When the officer arrived on the scene, the suspect fired a single shot from inside the home. The officer was struck and air lifted to a hospital, where they succumb to their injuries. The suspect, who has been indentified as 34-year-old Shane Wickham of Hays, was pronounced deceased at the scene due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation has been called in to handle the case. The name of the fallen police offcicer has not yet been released.
